Seattle, known as the Emerald City, is a vibrant and beautiful place surrounded by mountains, water, and evergreen forests. It’s a city that’s as much about natural beauty as it is about its diverse culture and delicious food scene. To get the inside scoop, we turned to Molly Wizenberg, the writer behind the beloved food blog Orangette and author of A Homemade Life. Molly’s guide to Seattle includes some of her favorite spots for oysters, coffee, and more. If you’re planning a trip or just looking to learn more about this incredible city, here’s her guide!
1. The Walrus and the Carpenter (Ballard)
Seattle is known for its oysters, and The Walrus and the Carpenter is one of the best spots to experience the city’s fresh seafood. Located in the Ballard neighborhood, this cozy oyster bar serves up some of the best oysters from the Pacific Northwest, alongside small plates of beautifully prepared food. Molly recommends getting a selection of oysters—there’s always something new and seasonal—and enjoying the intimate, bustling atmosphere. Pair your oysters with a refreshing glass of local white wine or a craft beer for a perfect meal.
2. Pike Place Market (Downtown)
No visit to Seattle is complete without a trip to Pike Place Market. It’s one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, offering everything from fresh fish to artisan crafts. Molly recommends wandering through the market, sampling local treats, and picking up a bouquet of fresh flowers (they’re famously affordable and beautiful!). Be sure to check out the Beecher’s Handmade Cheese stand for some of the best mac and cheese in town, or grab a fresh pastry from Piroshky Piroshky for a quick snack. For a unique experience, visit the fishmongers who toss fish across the market to one another.
3. Spinasse (Capitol Hill)
For a cozy and intimate dinner in Capitol Hill, Spinasse is a must-visit. Known for its exceptional Italian food, particularly the handmade pasta, this restaurant offers a refined yet homey atmosphere. The pasta at Spinasse is delicate and rich, with flavors that feel both comforting and elegant. Molly suggests ordering the tajarin, a type of thin, egg pasta, and pairing it with a glass of Italian wine. It’s a perfect spot for a special night out.
4. Kerry Park (Queen Anne)
Seattle’s landscape is one of its most striking features, and Kerry Park offers one of the best views of the city. Located on Queen Anne Hill, this small park offers a sweeping vista of downtown Seattle, with the iconic Space Needle in the foreground and Mount Rainier in the distance. Molly recommends visiting the park at sunset for a truly breathtaking view, where you can take in the stunning skyline and the changing colors of the sky as the sun sets behind the mountains.
5. Tilikum Place Café (Belltown)
For breakfast or brunch, head to Tilikum Place Café in Belltown, a cozy neighborhood spot that serves up comforting, creative dishes. Molly loves the Dutch babies (a kind of popover pancake), which are served with a variety of delicious toppings, including seasonal fruit and crème fraîche. The café has a relaxed, homey vibe, making it a perfect spot to start your day before heading out to explore the city.
6. The London Plane (Pioneer Square)
For a charming spot to sip coffee, enjoy breakfast, or pick up unique gifts, The London Plane in Pioneer Square is a great option. This beautiful café and market is known for its gorgeous interior, offering both a café and a florist’s shop in one space. You can enjoy a delicious pastry or a simple breakfast here, or pick up some flowers and artisanal goods from the market. Molly loves the quiet and peaceful ambiance, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy a coffee.
7. Fremont Brewing (Fremont)
Seattle is home to a burgeoning craft beer scene, and Fremont Brewing is one of Molly’s favorites. Located in the Fremont neighborhood, this brewery offers a variety of craft beers, from light ales to darker stouts. It has a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere with both indoor and outdoor seating. Molly suggests trying their Lush IPA or Universale Pale Ale while you relax in the beer garden.
8. Mount Rainier National Park (Outside the City)
While Seattle is known for its urban attractions, the surrounding nature is just as stunning. Mount Rainier National Park, located just outside the city, is a must-visit for anyone who enjoys hiking, mountain views, and beautiful scenery. Molly recommends spending a day hiking through the park’s alpine meadows or simply enjoying the breathtaking views of Mount Rainier, the tallest mountain in Washington state. In the summer, the wildflowers are in full bloom, and in the winter, the snow-covered landscape is truly magical.
9. Elliott Bay Book Company (Capitol Hill)
For book lovers, Elliott Bay Book Company is an iconic bookstore that should not be missed. Located in Capitol Hill, this independent bookstore is filled with an excellent selection of books, from bestsellers to lesser-known gems. Molly loves to spend hours browsing the aisles and picking up new reads. The store also has a lovely café, perfect for enjoying a hot cup of coffee while you read.
10. Canlis (Queen Anne)
For a truly special dining experience, Canlis is the place to go. Located on the shores of Lake Union in Queen Anne, this upscale restaurant offers stunning views of the lake and the city skyline, as well as a world-class dining experience. The menu changes seasonally, and the wine list is extensive, offering something for every palate. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply want to enjoy an unforgettable meal, Canlis is a Seattle institution.
